The Bono, Ahafo and Bono East Regional directorate of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has given assurance that water supplied by the company to customers in the three regions is safe to be consumed and there is no cause for alarm.
Speaking in an interview with Ark News in Sunyani Mr. Alhassan Hadisu, Regional Production Manager of the Company allayed the fears of consumers within its catchment areas despite the warning by the National Disaster Management Organisation NADMO about the contamination of Tano River.
The GWCL is fully equipped with logistics and chemicals to treat and supply safe drinking water to clients amidst the said contamination, he added but cautioned communities along the banks of the river to treat the NADMO warning with care to prevent any possible casualties.
The NADMO issued the warning to residents not to drink directly from the river following an accident involving an articulated truck carrying car batteries that fell into the river at Techiman Tanoso in Bono East Region.
This led to the dilution of acid from the batteries into the river, culminating in the death of several aquatic animals including fishes and crocodiles and rendering the river poisonous for untreated usage. The statement mentioned communities along the river including Techiman-Tanoso, Chiraa, Duayaw Nkwanta, Bechem, as well as Sunyani Tanoso and surroundings.
